LPGA Kia Classic Final Round Coverage With GolfNationUSA

Hee Kyung Seo Takes Kia Classic in a Walk

There is a new sheriff in town and her name is Hee Kyung Seo. The town is Carlsbad and the corral is the Kia Classic sponsored by J Golf. Her ticket to town came from the sponsor in the form of an exemption. She took advantage of the opportunity in style and simultaneously sent a message that the center of the women’s golf is based in Seoul rather than California or Florida. Seo fired enough birdies to have a six shooter to spare. Her twelve under performance survived a seven under par Sunday run by Inbee Park. Despite the strong round, Park only landed within six strokes of the leader and had to settle for second place.

The drama of the day was provided when Michelle Wie grounded her club in a hazard on the 11th hole and was awarded a two stroke penalty. She was clearly mad about it and initially declined to sign her card until she had the opportunity to review the tape. She apparently used the club to maintain her balance so as to not fall in the water, concerned about her white skirt.

“I did call for a ruling; I knew I did that, but at the same time I knew that I felt off‑balance. I closed my eyes when I hit the shot and I ground my club so I wouldn’t fall into the water. I was wearing a white skirt. I accept the fact that it is a penalty stroke, you ground a club in the water hazard, that happens, but the fact is that, you know, I felt like I was off‑balance, and that’s why I grounded the club, and they ruled, and there is nothing I can do about it.”

The drama quickly subsided when the calm and collected Seo strolled up the home hole before a robust gallery as the sun set. It was hard to understand what she said when she was mobbed by the South Korean media, but you got the sense this victory was the biggest thing to hit Seoul since the Olympics and short track skating. The difference there is the sheriff of short track still lives in America.

But today we saw the future of the LPGA. Her name is Hee Kyung Seo. Her parents who accompanied her throughout the tournament seemed as comfortable with their daughter’s new status in Carlsbad as Seo herself. “I love La Costa, I want to come here to rest,” she said trophy in hand. This is her town now; she may rest at her convenience.
